Camp Chai is the place for families looking for the ultimate summer of growing and belonging. Through generations, Camp Chai has been the home for campers to learn the important life skills of self-confidence, independence, risk taking and more through connecting with each other, our dedicated camp staff and the entire community that are part of our J. Our camp vision, “Camp Chai is a special kehillah (community) where each of us can make a positive difference in the lives of others and in ourselves” guides us in every activity and memorable events that happen every day. At Camp Chai, we do it all from swim to sports to art to dance and so much more with laughter and fun part of every day. Every child should have a Camp Chai Summer!!
Growing is part of every summer as each age is challenged uniquely. Our Lil’ Chai unit for those entering Kindergarten is the perfect transition with an amazing staff specifically trained for this age group. Each year, there are new challenges for every age group as the activities and choices expand through each unit. Our intentional design for every group provides different experiences yet our strongest sense of belonging comes from being part of a “tribe (groups named after the 12 tribes of Israel)”, an “adat (unit divided by ages), to being part of the entire Camp Chai Community!!
Our Lil’ Chai program for those entering Kindergarten is the perfect transition from the steady hand of Camp Simchah to the JCC’s Camp Chai. With an amazing staff specifically trained for this age group your child will enjoy the best of both worlds this summer.

For over 48 years, Laura has been part of Camp Chai and is returning as Camp Interim Director these next two summers as we head to our 50th Celebration of Camp Chai. Laura has guided generations of campers, staff and families through their camp experience with her belief often stated – “Camp is one of the MOST IMPORTANT experiences in a child’s life!!”
As Camp Director Emeritus these past years, Laura was a daily presence at carpool, morning & afternoon care, daily singing plus sharing Jewish values and Shabbat experiences every day and every week to all of our J camps. Stepping over into the director role means taking on familiar “responsibilities” of guiding staff to provide the growing experience of camp and creating ways to assure her presence in the all areas of care for our children, staff and families. Laura is ready, able and very excited to take on the challenge of bringing the traditions and celebration of Camp Chai to all.

Tara Ohayon has been a part of the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center in Dallas since she was three years old. She grew up at J camps, going on to work every summer while pursuing a degree in Special Education. She taught in the public schools before returning “home” to the J full time over twenty years ago. Tara is currently the Director of Early Childhood and a Camp Director, Supervisor of Youth/Teen Programming, and member of the J Agency Management Team. Tara has been recognized as a visionary director, gifted parent educator, worker with children and master trainer of staff. She has facilitated change and growth in her staff and believes in a coaching style of leadership. Tara believes that the foundation of her work begins with relationships and knows that each of us can make a difference in the lives of others. Tara loves that her children are now staff at camp!

All Camp Chai campers participate in daily swim lessons through our onsite Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy (LKSA). This abridged camp curriculum teaches excellence one stroke at a time with the comprehensive and result-driven SwimRight Method®. The curriculum stresses water safety and provides an environment where swimming is respected, healthy, and fun. Learn more about our swim academy at www.jccdallas.org/lksa.Kindergartners will participate in daily water play in the afternoons while campers in 1st through 6th grade have daily free swim.
The camp day begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:45 pm. Extended Care options are available from 7:45 am through 6:00 pm. See our website and registration forms for costs.
Children are placed by grade in tribes (after the Tribes of Israel) and units – boys and girls are separated into tribes. The “Friend Request” is available along with the other forms needed. Staff do their best to accommodate requests. As children grow, they are challenged by new activities and opportunities within the camp setting. The units are:
Your camper should come dressed in their swimsuit and a basecoat of sunscreen already applied, and they should bring a labeled change of clothes, sunscreen, and a towel. Some campers may opt to bring a second swimsuit since they will participate in swim lessons through our onsite Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy in the morning and water play (Kindergarten) / free swim (Grades 1-6) in the afternoon.
For safety, tennis shoes are best, and sandals are okay. All shoes MUST have backs.
In addition to their lunch, your camper may want to bring a labeled water bottle. We do have water stations located throughout camp, but campers sometimes prefer a water bottle.
